Comprehensive cover
Comprehensive cover is the broadest level of motor insurance, covering damage to your own vehicle as well as damage or injury you cause to others. It also typically covers fire and theft. Also called "fully comprehensive" or "comp".
Comprehensive vs third-party cover
The three levels of motor cover in the UK are: third-party only (the legal minimum), third-party fire and theft (TPFT), and comprehensive. Comprehensive is the broadest — it adds own-damage cover. Counterintuitively, comprehensive is often cheaper than TPFT for older vehicles because insurers associate TPFT buyers with higher-risk driving profiles.
At renewal, always compare all three levels, not just comprehensive. See our guide to comparing insurance quotes and our no-claims bonus guide for renewal tips.
